Mac programs for creating digital stories

Although PowerPoint and Fireworks are also available as Mac versions, this OS has its own impressive list of programs:

Apple’s iMovie and its older counterpart, iMovie HD (icon on right), allow users to create their own home movies, with all the features that the Windows programs contain. iMovie also incorporates the Ken Burns effect (pan and zoom) which can be edited to your liking. The 2008 version of iMovie has a user-friendly interface which students will no doubt enjoy exploring.

As all Mac’s come with a built in iSight camera, taking photos and video is made simple with Photo Booth and iPhoto. iPhoto allows users to import media from external cameras making it available on other applications.

Digital storytelling can be integrated into any Key Learning Area (KLA) as an alternative or extension to traditional hardcopy work. For the purpose of this task, focus will be placed on an integrated unit for Stage 2, titled ‘My Growing Self,’ from the PDHPE Modules of work. Such a unit would explore the personal life stories of individuals in a creative manner. The technology aspect of the K – 6 Science and Technology Syllabus requires students to be familiar with computer based technology.

Please view the following personal digital story created with iMovie by Ingrid Fizely, Sherree Spargo and Kyra D’mello.

Similar to the above, Stage 2 students would create a personal digital story relating to significant events in their lives. This would link to the following outcomes in the KLAs of PDHPE and Science and Technology:

Science

UT S2.9 Selects and uses a range of equipment, computer based technology, materials and other resources with developing skill to enhance investigation and design tasks.

Indicator – Selects media sources to used in a presentation of a story on the life events and directions of the individual.

PDHPE

GDS2.9 Describes life changes and associated feelings.

Indicators – Explains and values differences in growth and development between individuals at different stages; identifies feelings associated with life changes eg. grief, loss, family change, new friends.
